Founded in 1980, David Stanley Auctions are recognised world wide as the principal auctioneers of Antique Woodworking Tools.

Fifteen years ago David's son, Ian, joined the family firm and later Adam, his younger son, also came on board. As well as the family members, the team at Stordon Grange includes John James, who is responsible for the photographs in the catalogue and Peter Meadows who is the anchor man in the office.

Twenty years of specialist auctioneering has provided us with an in-depth knowledge of the tools and related items which we sell. This enables us to offer advice to both buyer and seller on all aspects of tools and tool collecting.

Since 1980 we have sold more over 250,000 lots of tools by auction, way ahead of any other tool auction house in the world. We are purely auctioneers, not dealers, avoiding the danger of a conflict of interest.

Our firm is noted for its professional and friendly approach, coupled with reliability and honesty. Trust plays a large part in our business; tools are sent out to known customers before payment is received and cheques are usually paid to vendors before the due date.

We guarantee complete confidentiality to all customers.

Whether you wish to buy or sell top price lots or more mundane items, the firm is uniquely positioned to advise you. You will be dealing with the principals, who are therefore able to give an immediate response to any queries or problems.

90% of all the important English and European tool collections worldwide that are offered for sale, are sold through David Stanley Auctions.

Our auctions

We hold six antique tool auctions each year. Many items from these auctions are exported world-wide.

Two International Auctions: Every tool is illustrated in the catalogue, many in colour. Through these auctions, each year we sell approx. 3500 lots of fine quality or rare items.

Four General Auctions: These consist of both user tools and collectable early tools. The better tools in these auctions are illustrated in the catalogue and advice is given as to which items would or would not be suitable for absentee bidding.
Viewing in the marquee Each auction starts with a view the evening before with further viewing time on the morning of sale which gives those who wish to attend ample time to examine and handle the tools on offer.

A careful look at the moulding planes International auctions usually contain around 1800 lots and these are sold at a rate exceeding 250 lots an hour - which can come as a surprise to some used to alternative styles of auctioneering. The advice is - make up your mind before the sale starts what you would like bid for and what you are prepared to pay. And don't be talking to fellow collectors at the bar when your lot comes up!

Car park market In addition to the sale, during the viewing period, an informal tool market takes place in the hotel car park where often bargains can be found.

Roy Arnold's book stall At the International auctions Roy Arnold, specialist bookseller, offers on his stall an extensive range of books, reprint catalogues and tool related printed material.

Absentee Bidding:
We welcome absentee bidding and all catalogues contain full absentee bidding instructions and notes for absentee bidders.
After each auction we pack and dispatch purchases made by absentee bidders by suitable methods in accordance with their instructions.
